Ingredients
  

6 thick slices white sandwich bread or Texas toast, slightly stale if possible
2 large eggs
3/4 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus extra for topping
Warm real maple syrup, for serving

Equipment

  • 1 large flat-top diner griddle
  • 1 wide shallow dish
  • 1 whisk

Method
 

Whisk the eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon together.
    Dip each bread slice briefly into the custard.
      Cook in a buttered griddle until golden on both sides.
        Stack the finished slices on a plate.
          Add a pat of butter on top and let it melt.
            Pour warm maple syrup generously over the stack.
              Serve immediately while warm.
