Ingredients
  

Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups granulated sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup hot brewed coffee
2 tsp vanilla extract
100g dark chocolate melted
Frosting:
1 cup softened butter
3/4 cup cocoa powder
3 cups sifted powdered sugar
1/3 cup heavy cream
50g melted dark chocolate
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt

Equipment

  • 2 9-inch round cake pans greased and lined with parchment
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1  electric hand mixer or stand mixer
  • 1 rubber spatula
  • 1 offset spatula for frosting
  • 1 cooling rack

Method
 

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 9-inch pans with parchment.
    Whisk all dry ingredients in a large bowl.
      Whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla, hot coffee, and melted chocolate together.
        Combine wet into dry and mix until just incorporated.
          Divide into pans and bake 32 to 35 minutes. Cool completely.
            Beat butter, add cocoa, powdered sugar, cream, melted chocolate, and vanilla to make frosting.
              Layer, crumb coat, chill, then frost and decorate with rustic swirls.
