Warmly Spiced Maple Cookies With a Brown Butter Maple Glaze

Soft, chewy maple cookies made with pure maple syrup and warm spices, finished with a nutty brown butter maple glaze and a pinch of flaked sea salt.

Ingredients
  

Cookies:
2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cloves
3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon maple extract (optional)
Brown Butter Maple Glaze:
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 to 2 tablespoons whole milk
Pinch of salt and cinnamon
To Finish:
Flaked sea salt
Chopped toasted pecans (optional)

Equipment

  • 1 stand mixer or hand mixer
  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1 whiskazing.
  • 1 rubber spatula
  • 1 Baking sheets
  • 1 parchment paper
  • 1 medium cookie scoop
  • 1 small saucepan for brown butter
  • 1 Wire cooling rack
  • 1 fork or spoon for glazing.

Method
 

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
    Whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and spices together in a bowl.
      Beat butter and both sugars on medium-high for 2 to 3 minutes until pale and fluffy.
        Add maple syrup, vanilla, and maple extract. Beat briefly. Add egg and egg yolk and mix until smooth.
          Mix in dry ingredients on low until just combined.
            Scoop dough onto prepared sheets and bake 10 to 12 minutes. Cool on pan 5 minutes.
              Brown butter in a saucepan until nutty and golden. Cool 3 minutes. Whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, salt, and cinnamon.
                Glaze warm cookies, sprinkle with flaked sea salt and pecans. Set 15 to 20 minutes.
